Women’s Equality Day

By Linda | August 26, 2009

Today is Women’s Equality Day. You forgot? Never knew? Join the crowd. This day is very important. It marks the 89th anniversary of women’s suffrage after passage of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution. Not to be forgotten, Congresswoman Bella Abzug sponsored legislation in 1971 giving our president the opportunity each and every year [...]

Ladies of the Court—From Round Robins to Round Tables

By Linda | August 22, 2009

A transformation almost worthy of a fairy tale occurred yesterday while some of the Ladies of the Court spent two very hot, steamy hot hours confronting our physical prowess and went racquet to racquet in round robin tournament play.  With my new found skills, I went up against the best of the best.  Alas, very [...]

Ladies of the Court—When It’s Time to Switch Sides

By Linda | August 20, 2009

Tennis is a huge part of my life on the Vineyard.  As soon as we get off the ferry, one of the first places we head is to Matakesett Tennis Club on Katama Road.  George Brown has been the tennis pro there for at least theplast 20 years.  We spend a few minutes catching up [...]

Telling Stories—“It’s All in Your Head”

By Linda | August 18, 2009

“It’s All In Your Head” or “IAIYH” (pronounced eye-yayh and accented according to your ethnic background, similar to oy, oy!)  Where have you heard this one before?  Well, unfortunately many women are increasingly hearing this from their physicians.  It happens when the doctor cannot arrive at a diagnosis, find a treatment that works, or just [...]

Silly Story in Today’s NY Times: Why Democrats Love Martha’s Vineyard

By Linda | August 14, 2009

I was emailed this link today by a friend who is coming to visit us next week.  After summering for almost twenty years on Martha’s Vineyard (MV or “the vineyard” to us regulars), I thought I should respond to today’s NY Times blog post on MV.  Highlighting the musings of many of the notables who [...]

End of Life Caring—A Sad Time

By Linda | August 12, 2009

Two weeks ago we celebrated the 90th birthday of an exceptional man, my father-in-law Dr. Samuel Greenfield.  Sam became ill last week and by Friday, he passed away.  On Sunday, after Shabbat (the Sabbath), we gathered for the funeral and to mourn our loss.  We mourn the end of his life, a life of caring.
It [...]

Telling Stories—When Will They Ever Learn?

By Linda | August 7, 2009

Recently I spoke with now-colleague, former-resident about her life partner’s experience with promotion at a world renowned cancer center.  This woman is an expert on the risk factors and patterns of disease in cancer patients.  Her current research in women with ovarian cancer is particularly noteworthy.
Her curriculum vitae (CV) is quite extensive and equally impressive.  [...]

On the Beach—Mature Women, Sexual Dysfuction, and All That Jazz

By Linda | August 6, 2009

South Beach is one of our favorite beaches in Martha’s Vineyard.  The sound of waves crashing to shore makes great background noise to drown out conversations that hold the shared secrets of friendship.  That is why some of my best conversations have taken place on South Beach.
Yesterday I had one of those special times.  For [...]

A Predictably Unpredictable Vacation—Hey, It’s the Little Things

By Linda | August 3, 2009

Route 90 East is the long, generally boring, well-traveled route which encounters route 425 East, which leads directly over the Bourne Bridge to route 28 South into Woods Hole, Massachusetts.  After twenty years, I could do the drive with my eyes closed.  But as the lone driver and only passenger of our fun and food-filled mini-van, [...]
