When History Repeats Itself

By Linda | May 29, 2009

An interesting piece came across my desk (well really my computer desk-top) this week.  One of the professors in the English Department at UB, Jim Holstun, had researched the history of the University at Buffalo’s response to gender discrimination.  It seems that I am just one from a long line of agitating feminists.
It began back [...]

My Colleagues, My Friends

By Linda | May 27, 2009

Within the “House of Medicine” there are actually a variety of families.  Of course, the composition of each kind of family depends on the context.  For example, the caregivers in a hospital can be one family; a medical or surgical unit may be a smaller, and sometimes, more close-knit family. Some of these families are [...]

Memorial Day 2009

By Linda | May 26, 2009

This weekend our country observed Memorial Day. Celebrating the courage and dedication of so many men, and a few women, who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we all can live as a free people. Whether one is a hawk or a dove or somewhere in between, others have fought and died [...]

Lost In Space—Further Confessions of a Technologically Challenged Accidental Crusader

By Linda | May 20, 2009

When I started my journey, I was engaged in a crusade to bring attention to the gender gap for women physicians.  And I haven’t given up on that.  Women physicians have huge hurdles to overcome before they are on an even playing field with their male colleagues.  Not just in their pay, but in their [...]

Lost in Space—Confessions of a Technologically-Impaired Accidental Crusader

By Linda | May 18, 2009

This week I took a rest from blogging, as some of you may have noticed.  (Did anyone notice?)  It wasn’t Mother’s Day burn out or laziness or disinterest.  Just time to think about what I want to say.  Problem is, the way our ideas are promoted and communicated changes faster than I can keep up [...]

Mother’s Day 2009

By Linda | May 10, 2009

Mother’s Day is not just another Hallmark holiday.  Keeping those pithy writers and talented artists off the unemployment lines was not the intention of this celebration of mothers, started in the 20th century in the United States.  Of all the gratuitous, secular days we Americans celebrate (along with Boss’s Day, Nurse’s Day, OR Technician’s Day, [...]

UB Made the News Today, Oh Boy! Picketing Against Gender Biased Promotion Practices Makes National News

By Linda | May 8, 2009

Just this past Tuesday, about 35-40 faculty at the University of Buffalo, picketed their own Faculty Senate’s meeting.  Why? Because the Faculty Senate president refused the request of a large group of faculty (90 signed the petition to have the matter discussed) to place on the agenda concerns of gender bias in the promotion practices [...]

Myth Busting: Gender Stratification in Healthcare Exists Because Women Physicians……. (You Fill in the Blank)

By Linda | May 7, 2009

…Tick them off.  Marriage, motivation, maternity leaves, and mechanism of compensation.  Job structure, juggling and job suitability.  Just a few of the many reasons that try to explain why women physicians are not proportionately represented in leadership, in medical education, in certain specialties and perhaps, most egregious of all, are not compensated at the same [...]

Back to School

By Linda | May 6, 2009

Confession:  Another movie I love is Rodney Dangerfield’s Back to School.  So when the OR team in my husband’s room bought him the special edition copy, I was the first one to pounce on it and watch this classic comedy again (and again).  So what made me think about this particular movie on this particular [...]
