Who Are You Anyway?

By Linda | February 1, 2010

Patients in the hospital need to be seen everyday by an attending physician (I believe the assignation “attending” comes from the idea that the doctor is “attending” to a patient’s health or care). Rounding is the name of this activity which requires me to go around and see the patients for whom I care [...]

Friends Help to Heal All Wounds

By Linda | December 10, 2009

Medical meetings have a structure, usually unique to the group. SENTAC’s is a long first day of scientific presentations, lectures and panels, followed by the annual banquet. Most of the time the banquet food is boring and tasteless, the company can be boring but usually not tasteless, and the speeches are definitely boring and [...]

Silly Story in Today’s NY Times: Why Democrats Love Martha’s Vineyard

By Linda | August 14, 2009

I was emailed this link today by a friend who is coming to visit us next week.  After summering for almost twenty years on Martha’s Vineyard (MV or “the vineyard” to us regulars), I thought I should respond to today’s NY Times blog post on MV.  Highlighting the musings of many of the notables who [...]

End of Life Caring—A Sad Time

By Linda | August 12, 2009

Two weeks ago we celebrated the 90th birthday of an exceptional man, my father-in-law Dr. Samuel Greenfield.  Sam became ill last week and by Friday, he passed away.  On Sunday, after Shabbat (the Sabbath), we gathered for the funeral and to mourn our loss.  We mourn the end of his life, a life of caring.
It [...]

Miracles of Modern Medicine—Happy Birthday, Grandpa Sam!

By Linda | July 28, 2009

When I was still in single digits, I remember calculating how old I would be when the century turned.  Forty-eight.  Yup. That seemed so old to an 8 year old.  So far off.  Unimaginable.  Would not have many years left to live after that. Nope.  Life expectancy was then perhaps only in the mid-60’s.  I [...]

“Telling Stories”—Getting Started

By Linda | July 17, 2009

During my 10 year legal journey, one of the fantasies that kept me afloat was a promise I made to myself.  When it was all over, I was going to write a book.  I was sure that everyone needed to know what I knew and to learn what I learned and to feel what I [...]

Three, Two, One…..Launch!

By Linda | July 16, 2009

Can it have been nearly 27 years ago when I gave birth to our firstborn, a son, Jeremy?  I hate to admit it, but it’s true.  But what is more unbelievable is the world into which he grew up.  No one could have imagined today would look so different from that day in 1982.
He was [...]

Back to School

By Linda | May 6, 2009

Confession:  Another movie I love is Rodney Dangerfield’s Back to School.  So when the OR team in my husband’s room bought him the special edition copy, I was the first one to pounce on it and watch this classic comedy again (and again).  So what made me think about this particular movie on this particular [...]

It’s May!

By Linda | April 30, 2009

For me, May has always been the most hopeful month of the year.  Okay, so I am celebrating its arrival one day early, but who’s counting?  The weather starts to look up here in Buffalo, sometimes.  We celebrate Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and my birthday.  Communions, commencements, and college reunions make for memories and milestones [...]

They Have All Grown Up

By Linda | April 20, 2009

There is one question I never get from a male medical student or resident.  It’s not that I discourage open conversation about almost any topic, but it just doesn’t seem to be on their minds.  However, this question is almost always a topic for discussion with the female students and resident trainees.  The question?   “Can [...]
